About Us

What we believe

About GOD

We believe that there is only one God who exists in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10-11; Matthew 28:19; Luke 3:22)

About the Bible

We believe the Bible is inspired by God and that His Spirit directed men to write His words; therefore, we believe that it contains no errors. (2 Timothy 3:15-17; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:21)

About Jesus Christ

We believe that Jesus the Christ was born to a virgin named Mary, that He is both God and man, that He never sinned, and that He performed miracles. Jesus died, was buried, and rose from the dead so that all sins can be forgiven. Jesus is now with the Father in heaven but will some day return to earth in power and glory. (John 1:1; Philippians 2:5, 6; Luke 1:26-38; Hebrews 7:26; Acts 2:22; 1 Corinthians 15:3; Matthew 28:6; Acts 1:9-11)

About Salvation

We believe that the blood of Jesus Christ as a result of His work on the cross provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sin. Therefore, only those who place their faith in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross will be saved. When a person believes in Jesus, God gives that person a brand-new life and he or she is born anew. (Luke 24:47; John 3:3; Romans 10:13-15; Ephesians 2:8; Galatians 4:6)

About the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells every Christian and that He provides the power for living a life that pleases God. The Holy Spirit guides the believer to what is true and strengthens him to resist what is not from God. The Holy Spirit also gives every believer at least one spiritual gift for the building up of the church and God’s glory. We are filled by the Holy Spirit when we yield to God’s authority in our life and ask Him to fill us. (Romans 12:1, 2; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 13:12; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4,8; I Corinthians 12: 1-13; Ephesians 5:18)

About the Church

We believe that the church is the body of Christ, of which Jesus Christ is the head. The members of the church are those who have placed their faith in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, His death, His burial, His resurrection, His ascension, and His ultimate return for the church. The purpose of the church is to glorify God by loving Him, living as He instructed in the Word, and making Him known to this lost world. (Ephesians 1:22, 23; Colossians 1:18; Matthew 28:18-20)

About Eternity

We believe that those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ will live eternally with God in heaven and that those who have not placed their faith in Jesus will live eternally separated from God in hell. (Matthew 25:46; Mark 9:43-48; Revelation 19:20; 20:1-15; 21:8)

About the Christian Life

We believe that all Christians should live for Christ and not for themselves. By obeying God’s commands as found in the Bible and by yielding daily to the Spirit of God, every believer can mature and be conformed to the likeness of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:20-26; John 14: 23, 24; Romans 12:1-3)

Church History

In 1965, The Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church begun very rich and glorious history. Many of our churches that exist today grew and developed from a small group of black worshipers who decided that there was a need for a church in this section of town.

Realizing the need for spiritual witnessing and a place to worship of our own. A group of concerned citizens assembled in the homes new the site which we were going to use in February of 1965, singing and praying our church into existence. We knew that with GOD nothing was impossible and if we put trust in him and persevered with faith and pray, our dreams could come true. We open our hearts completely to transforming the power of GOD’s love.

Feeling the urgent need for a spiritual leader in an Infant Church, Rev. M. A. Brown, one of the founders, was selected as the first pastor. After Rev Brown departure, the Rev R.L. Washington pastored of our church from 1965 – 1968.

Some of our first members were Mildred Johnson & Family, Charles and Randy Allen, Kenneth Dale, Joyce Dale (Williams), Eugene Berry, Aaron Brigham, Onetia Daniel and Family, Florence Smiley & Family. Watch care members were Rev. J.C. and Earlean White & Family, Henry Williams and Sedelia Edwards.

In 1968 Rev. J.C White served as interim pastor. After serving several months as interim pastor, Pastor Whited was called by Rev. R.L. Castle and Rev. Gordon to pastor our church.

The Bethlehem Baptist church progressed spiritually and financially. The church was blessed with increase in membership, spiritual progress and successful financial program.

Under Rev. White’s leadership in 1970, The construction of the present church building began. While under construction Bethlehem Church continued to hold Sunday services in the little converted house at 111 Oriole Street.

Rev. White continues his vigorous and dynamic leadership, his high visions or excellence and his preaching of the gospel has held our church to exceeding height of prosperity. The church continues to experience substantial growth with new involvement and programs as presented by Rev. White. Under his leadership, we have entered a new cycle. We are the builders and the doers, who always strive to make Bethlehem Baptist Church better and stronger.
